The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association released its seventh 2019 Division III Warrior and New Balance Team of the Week accolades on Tuesday, March 26. Ten players earned recognition from the organization as they each posted exceptional performances in their programs games this past week.
The list of honorees are as follows:
Billy Sasso, York College of Pennsylvania (Sr., FO, Freehold, NJ)
Sasso helped lead the No. 6 Spartans to an 11-7 win over No. 5 Cabrini on Friday, March 22. He was instrumental in getting the Spartans early possessions as they led 6-0 at the half. He won 7-of-8 first half face offs to get the Spartans out to a great start. He finished the contest with a mark of 18-of-21 (.857) for the X.
Max Wayne, Christopher Newport University (So., D, Ashburn, Va.)
Wayne led the Captains with 14 caused turnovers during the week, including seven on March 20 against Virginia Wesleyan. That total equaled the third-highest single-game total in program history. He has now forced at least three turnovers in 10 straight games and leads the nation with 43 total caused turnovers this season.
Tommy DeLuca, Cabrini University (Jr., D, Apex, NC)
DeLuca matched a career-high recording seven caused turnovers while adding a career best seven groundballs on Friday, as the Cavaliers suffered an 11-7 loss at No. 6 York. The junior also tallied a fourth quarter assist.
Jack O’Connell, Dickinson College (Sr., A, Sands Point, N.Y.)
O'Connell helped Dickinson College to a Centennial Conference opener victory, as the Red Devils downed Washington College 19-14. O’Connell finished the game with six goals and two assists to pace the Red Devil attack.
Josh Melton, Salisbury University (Jr., A, Centennial, Co.)
Josh Melton turned in a new career-best performance in Salisbury's 18-3 victory over SUNY Geneseo. Melton surpassed his previous career-high of 10 points totaling 11, netting five goals and tying his career-high in assists with six. Melton had a hand in four of the six first quarter tallied for the maroon and gold but would play an even bigger role in the second frame as he totaled five total points and had a hand in every single second quarter goal for the Sea Gulls. Melton posted two goals and three assists in the second frame as part of a 5-0 run to five the Gulls an 11-1 lead at the break. His 50 points and 22 assists are both team-best's while those numbers rank second and third in the conference respectively.
Luc Swedlund, Stockton University (So., A, Randolph, NJ)
Swedlund was exceptional for the Ospreys as he scored a game-high seven goals in 17-10 win over Plattsburgh State. He followed up that performance netting a game-high five goals in Stockton’s 18-12 win over Misericordia.
Blake Gray, Gettysburg College (Sr., M, Reisterstown, Md.)
Gray tied his personal best with five goals in ninth-ranked Gettysburg's 13-9 victory over No. 8 Ursinus to open Centennial Conference play. Gray, who also scored his 100th career point, posted three of his goals during a 7-0 run spanning the second and third quarters.
Cam Isaac, Rochester Institute of Technology (Sr., M, Webster, NY)
Isaac helped lead No. 4 RIT to a 2-0 record. The senior midfielder tallied nine goals and 11 points in two games. He scored four goals in a win over St. John Fisher College, and five in a win over Vassar College. Isaac shot 11-of-13 (69.2%).
PJ Dettor, Gettysburg College (So., D, Annapolis, MD)
Dettor posted three caused turnovers and two ground balls in No. 9 Gettysburg's 13-9 win over No. 8 Ursinus. He helped the Bullets hold the Bears to just four goals through the first three quarters and tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers in the fourth quarter.
Chad Simons, Amherst College (Jr., G, Warren, NJ)
Chad Simons was impressive in between the pipes for the No. 2 Mammoths in a 2-0 week, racking up double digit stops on back-to-back games. In a 12-10 win versus Endicott, Simons logged 13 saves before adding 17 more stops in a 20-8 victory over Bowdoin to finish the week with 30 saves, a 9.00 GAA and a 62.5 save percentage. He also corralled 4 ground balls and a forced turnover.
