BALTIMORE, Md. - The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) had their annual awards at the 2019 Nike Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) convention luncheon on Friday.

Cabrini University men’s lacrosse head coach Steve Colfer was named the 2019 USILA Francis "Babe" Kraus Division III Coach of the Year.

On May 12, 2018, the Cabrini men’s lacrosse team suffered a 12-7 loss at Wesleyan in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. While the 176-mile ride back to Cabrini’s Radnor, PA campus was long and disappointing, it also proved to be an important one in the Cavaliers’ drive to the 2019 NCAA Championship. Over the next 379 days, Colfer, his staff and players focused on one simple motto, “Be 1-0 Today.” The simple statement went well beyond just game day. It referred to every rep in every drill, every rep in the weight room, every class in the academic schedule. Collecting enough of those 1-0 days prepared the Cavaliers for the hardships of a long season. As the 60 players and coaches collected a string of 1-0 days on the practice field and in the weight room, the results proved positive on the field. Cabrini was crowned 2019 NCAA Division III National Champion. His career speaks for itself.

Colfer will enter his 20th season at Cabrini with a 284-72 career record, a mark reached by just 25 coaches in NCAA history, while his .798 win percentage ranks among the sport’s top 10 all time. Colfer has coached three National Players of the Year among Cabrini’s 77 USILA All-Americans and led them to an NCAA record 121 consecutive conference victories. While anyone who knows Colfer knows that he would give all of the credit for his success to his assistant coaches and players, it is his 20-year collection of 1-0 days that has established Cabrini as one of the nation’s top programs.

These USILA awards are presented annually to the nation's most outstanding lacrosse head coaches for Division I, II, and III.
